Recent Awards for Current and Previous Blackbird Contributors

Natasha Trethewey was named Poet Laureate of the United States.

David Wojahn received the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize from the Academy of American Poets for World Tree (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2011).

Alan Shapiro is a finalist for the 2012 National Book Award for his collection of poetry, Night of the Republic (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2012).

Kathleen Graber, Anna Journey, Joy Katz, Matthew Nienow, Maggie Smith, Allison Titus, and Daneen Wardrop received grants from the National Endowment of the Arts in 2011.

Lauren Goodwin Slaughter received a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award.

Katherine Larson won the 2012 Kate Tufts Discovery Award.

Traci Brimhall, Rachel Richardson, Will Schutt, and Matthew Thorburn received Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Prizes.

David Huddle received the 2012 Emyl Jenkins Sexton Literary Award for Fiction from the Library of Virginia for Nothing Can Make Me Do This (Tupelo Press, 2011).

David Wojahn received the 2012 Literary Award for Poetry from the Library of Virginia for World Tree. Dave Smith was a finalist for Hawks on Wires.

Kelly Cherry received the 2012 Carol Weinstein Prize in Poetry from the Library of Virginia.

Hugh Martin received the Iowa Review’s inaugural Jeff Sharlet Memorial Award for Veterans.

Tarfia Faizullah received the 2012 Crab Orchard Series in Poetry First Book Award. Her collection, Seam, will be published by Southern Illinois University Press in February 2014.

Emilia Phillips received the 2012 Editor’s Choice Akron Poetry Prize.

Dawn Losinger received the 2012 Idaho Prize for Poetry for Whelm (Lost Horse Press).

Diane Suess is the winner of the Mid-American Review’s Fineline Competition for “I emptied my little wishing well of its emptiness.”
