               Tennessee Williams by William Jay Smith

   Unseen Character (part 2)

David Roby is a playwright, actor, and director. He is the author of Sometimes There’s God So Quickly, a 90-minute one-man show produced and directed by Jodie Merkell at the Tennessee Williams Center in 2012, in which he played fifteen different characters, all of whom have a link with Tennessee Williams. His play The Lightly Attended Funeral of the Amateur Radio Operator was produced and performed at the annual Ten for Tenn Play Festival in Athens, Tennessee.

Roby holds a BFA in acting from the University of North Carolina and an MFA in acting from Illinois State University. He is the recipient of the 2005 Jean Kennedy Smith Playwriting Award. He was the 2008 Walter E. Dakin Fellow in playwriting and the 2009 Tennessee Williams Scholar at the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. He has been a Visiting Playwright Fellow at Endstation Theatre, and was the 2010–2012 Tennessee Williams Playwright-in-Residence at Sewanee: The University of the South. He teaches playwriting and directing at Miles College in Birmingham Alabama, and playwriting at the Sewanee Young Writers’ Conference.  end
