Consequently, while Helfgott’s process of making may seem wholeheartedly additive, subtractive decisions can be just as important. In his collages, the foregrounding of each page of notes eliminates, sometimes mischievously, portions of the photograph with which it is paired, thereby marginalizing an image that nonetheless intrigues, even in a partially extant state.
