Sound Installation

Wall of Sound, 1996, 8' x 35' x 15'; incorporating sound by Jem Finer; painted paper on plasterboard, ADAT 8 track tape deck, mixing deck, 4 amplifiers, 8 speakers.

Eight independent sound tracks are heard from behind eight panels, each painted a different set of colours. The sixty-minute composition, consisting of sequences of abstract sounds and samples, is heard through the colour. Divided into eight tracks amplified to separate speakers, the sound feels like it is moving around the space. The large painted panels are intended to evoke speaker stacks. Jem Finer is a musician whose "Long Player" project of a thousand -year non-repeating music composition was sponsored by Artangel in 1999 and will run for the next millennium.
