DAVID FREED

Portrait of L.L.

Roll over to magnify detail Portrait of L.L., 1993
Intaglio with color and collaged materials
 17 x 64½ in.

David Freed created this portrait of Larry Levis from life when he was working with Levis to produce a broadside of the poem “The Two Trees” and a fine press book of the poem “Elegy with a Thimbleful of Water in the Cage.” Text from “The Two Trees” appears in Levis’s handwriting near the center of the portrait, and one of Levis’s cigarette butts is attached to the bottom left corner.
